About Vai Shakoor
Biography
Vai Shakoor is a powerhouse spoken word artist, actress, and the author of The Vai Print from the South Side of Chicago. Born on August 6th, Vai’s journey began in youth slam poetry, where she competed in nationally recognized competitions like Louder Than A Bomb and Brave New Voices. Her talent and passion for storytelling earned her the opportunity to perform at Willis Tower, share her work with legendary poet Useni Perkins, and grace stages across Illinois, Atlanta, and Texas. She has been featured on Write About Now and SoFar Sounds.
Beyond the stage, Vai is dedicated to using her art as a catalyst for change. She has worked with group homes and juvenile detention centers, bringing poetry as a form of healing and self-expression to young people in need. She is also involved with organizations that support the re-entry of formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them find their voices and reintegrate into society.
Vai’s mission is to continue making progress through poetry, using her voice to shed light on critical issues such as sexual assault awareness, body positivity, and mental health. With her powerful words and unwavering dedication, she remains a force for change in both the spoken word community and beyond.
